Dean Keeney

My name is Dean Keeney, and I serve as the Head Coach of the program. I am also a proud former player (2012–2016) and had the honor of serving as team captain during my junior and senior seasons. Our program is deeply rooted in tradition, having had only five head coaches in its 55-year history. Each one a proud alumnus of Saint Joseph’s University. Finbarr O’Connor led the program for 34 years, followed by Hugh Walsh, who played for Coach O’Connor. Matt McGarvey ’15, a former player under Coach Walsh, took over in 2017, followed by JT Tarantino (2017–2024). In March 2025, we lost former head coach Hugh Walsh after his battle with cancer, but his legacy, leadership, and dedication to SJU Hockey continue to live on through our program and played a meaningful role in our success this season & instilled all of the core values in all of us Coaches, that we pass on to the players that we coach. The 2025–2026 season ended in tremendous fashion with an overtime victory over University of Virginia to capture the ACC Championship. The continued support from our alumni, families, and friends plays a vital role in our success and helps ensure that the tradition of SJU Hockey continues for generations to come.
